Starting a Business With a Partner? Get the Agreement Right.

Most partner disputes aren't about money. They're about decisions that were never written down. We fix that before it becomes a problem.

What Happens When You Skip the Founders Agreement

Two partners launch a consulting firm 50/50. Eighteen months in, one wants to take outside investment to grow faster. The other wants to stay self-funded. Nothing in the operating agreement breaks the tie, and the relationship breaks instead.

Or this: three founders agree the work will be split evenly. A year in, one of them is putting in 60-hour weeks while the other two coast. There's no compensation framework that accounts for sweat equity, no exit terms, and no process for forcing a buyout. The honest conversation gets delayed until it's a lawyer conversation.

These situations are common and solvable. They're not solvable retroactively for free. They are solvable, very cheaply, in advance — by writing down what each of you actually expects while you still agree on it.

How the Founders Agreement Works

  1. Each member watches a short video. It covers the questions that cause the most disputes: ownership splits, decision-making authority, compensation, exit terms.
  2. Together, you complete a worksheet. Write down your actual answers while things are good and everyone agrees.
  3. We draft your Founders Agreement. Based on your answers, it becomes part of your operating documents. A reference point if things ever get tense.
Multi-member add-on: $195 one-time — included with any Launch plan.

Founders Agreement FAQ

What is a Founders Agreement?
A Founders Agreement is a written record of how the owners of a business have agreed to run it — who owns what, who decides what, how compensation works, and what happens when someone wants to leave. We base ours on a structured worksheet each member completes, so the document reflects your actual answers rather than boilerplate.
Do I need an operating agreement if I have a Founders Agreement?
Yes — they work together. The operating agreement governs the LLC legally. The Founders Agreement records the specific decisions you've made between owners. Together they cover both the legal structure and the human agreements.
What if my partner and I already trust each other?
The agreement is for when that changes, not for right now. The cost of writing it down today is low. The cost of figuring it out later, when you no longer agree, is high.
Can a married couple use the multi-member add-on?
Yes — especially relevant for Iowa community property questions and the federal tax treatment of spouse-owned LLCs. We'll walk through both during your strategy call.
What happens if we skip the Founders Agreement now?
You can add it later, but it's easier and cheaper to do it at formation. Once the relationship has stress in it, the conversation gets harder, the negotiation takes longer, and the cost goes up.
