What Happened

On April 14, 2026, Painted Tree Boutiques notified vendors that it was ceasing all business operations, effective immediately. All 60 locations are closed. No advance warning. No transition period.

Many vendors paid rent just days before, on April 11. Many were expecting payment for Easter holiday sales. The staff at local stores were just as blindsided as the vendors.

Get Your Merchandise Out Now

You have from now through April 24, 2026 to retrieve your inventory. Hours are 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily. Call the store when you arrive and staff will let you in.

  • Do not wait. Access is subject to landlord decisions and could be cut off at any time.
  • Bring help, packing materials, and vehicles. Store staff have limited ability to assist.
  • Document everything first. Before you start packing, take photos and video of your booth from multiple angles. Record the condition of your merchandise and note anything missing or damaged.
  • Be respectful to staff. They lost their jobs too. This was not their decision.

Protect Your Financial Claims

You likely have money owed to you: rent you just paid, unpaid sales proceeds, security deposits. Recovering that money will depend on what happens next legally, which likely means a Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing.

Start gathering your documentation now:

  • Your vendor agreement with Painted Tree
  • Bank statements showing rent payments, especially the April 11 payment
  • Records of any unpaid sales proceeds owed to you
  • Security deposit receipts
  • All emails, texts, and letters from Painted Tree, including the closure notice

What Comes Next

When a company like Painted Tree ceases operations, a Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing typically follows. That means a court-appointed trustee will liquidate the company’s assets and distribute proceeds to creditors in priority order. Unsecured creditors, which includes most vendors, are paid last.

We want to be honest: the recovery for unsecured creditors in Chapter 7 is often small. But filing your claim costs little and ensures you are in line for whatever is available. You may also want to file a complaint with your state’s Attorney General, especially given the timing of rent collection just days before closure.

We are putting together detailed guidance on every step of this process, including how to file a proof of claim when the bankruptcy case opens. Fill out the form above if you would like us to send it to you when it is ready.

Do Not Wait

The merchandise retrieval window closes April 24, 2026. Get your inventory out as soon as possible and make sure you document everything before you pack up. We are here to help you through the rest.
