Most people think that you can go register your business as an LLC and you’re good, but that’s the farthest from the truth. You could still be sued and lose your house, car, or anything valuable.
Here’s what you need to start an LLC:
- Register your LLC. Anyone can do this!
- Write an operating agreement. It will maximize your protection, and is your backup should something go wrong.
- Observe corporate formalities. These are rules that you observe to keep your business strong. E.g. using a business bank account for your business instead of a personal one.

Every Launch Plan includes entity formation (LLC, S-Corp, corporation, or partnership), a custom operating agreement, EIN registration, registered agent service for 5 months, Momentum membership benefits with unlimited email Q&A for all 5 months, and access to our resource library. Launch Basic ($975) adds one attorney strategy call in Month 1. Launch Advanced ($1,950) adds five monthly attorney strategy calls.
Should I form an LLC or a corporation?
For most small businesses, an LLC is the right choice — simpler structure, pass-through taxation, and flexible management. If you plan to raise venture capital or issue stock options, start as a C-corporation instead. We'll help you decide in your first strategy call.
How long does the Launch Plan take?
Formation is typically complete within the first month. The full 5-month plan then gives you ongoing support as you start operating, sign clients, and hire. By month 5, most clients are running confidently on their own.
Can I upgrade from Basic to Advanced after I start?
Yes. If your business situation changes — you add a co-founder or bring on investors — we can discuss upgrading your plan. Talk to us early so we can make any operating agreement changes before relationships get complicated.
What happens after the 5 months end?
Momentum membership benefits are included for all 5 months of your Launch Plan. After that, you can continue with Momentum at $95/month for ongoing email support, compliance guidance, and member-only discounts on future legal work. You can pause or cancel anytime.
What's the difference between NU Legal and the Surge Launch Plans?
NU Legal is our self-service brand — same attorneys built the documents, no meetings required, starts at $499. The Launch Plans include direct attorney time: one strategy call for Basic, five monthly calls for Advanced. Choose NU Legal if you're comfortable navigating the process independently. Choose a Launch Plan if you want an attorney available to answer questions and guide your decisions.
Can I start with NU Legal and upgrade to a Launch Plan later?
Yes. If you start at NU Legal and later decide you want ongoing attorney support, contact us. We'll apply a credit toward a Launch Plan for work already completed and pick up from where you are.
Is the Launch Plan a subscription I can cancel?
The Launch Plan is a 5-month payment plan, not a subscription. The full engagement is $975 (Basic) or $1,950 (Advanced), paid monthly. Unlike a subscription, early cancellation does not release you from the remaining balance. Momentum membership, which is included during your Launch Plan, is a separate optional continuation after the plan ends and can be cancelled anytime.
