How to Fight Burnout as a Business Owner
2024 wore a lot of owners down. Here is how to spot burnout, hand off the work that is draining you, and head into 2025 with something left in the tank.
December 23, 2024
Let me start with the honest part. 2024 was discouraging for a lot of business owners. If you are heading into the new year worn out, you are not imagining things.
Election years are tough. Real estate interest rates were high. People felt poor, so less cash flowed through local communities. Too many businesses closed their doors in the last year, and those of you who stayed open worked your tails off to keep things together.
Here is the good news, and the reason I think 2025 is going to be better. The election is over. Interest rates have dropped and there are two more rate cuts coming. Inflation slowed down. More consumers are shopping locally this year. Payrolls nationally have increased more than expected.
But a better year only helps you if you are still standing to see it. So before anyone talks to you about growth, let's talk about burnout.
Burnout Is the Real Risk Right Now
It breaks my heart to see business owners stretched thin and feeling like giving up. I admit, I have felt it, and I know many of you have too. After a year like the one we just had, being tired is not a character flaw. It is the predictable result of carrying a business through a slow stretch with fewer people than you needed.
The trouble is that burnout rarely announces itself. It shows up as a short temper with your best employee, a stack of decisions you keep pushing to next week, and a growing sense that the business owns you instead of the other way around.
Burnout is not a sign you picked the wrong business. It is usually a sign you are still doing work that somebody else could be doing.
Free Videos for Owners Who Are Stretched Thin
I worked with Jacqueline to put together a couple of videos for owners who are stretched thin. There are six of them, about 20 minutes total, and they are free for business owners. If you want to learn how to delegate, she included additional resources along with the videos.
They are short on purpose. If you are the kind of owner who never finds an hour for anything that is not billable, you can get through the whole series in one lunch break.
If you have not watched them yet and you want the link, send us a message and we will get it to you. If you want the longer version of why this happens to good owners, I wrote about it in why running a small business is mentally exhausting.
Start With What You Can Hand Off
Delegation is the part most owners skip, usually because handing something off feels slower than doing it yourself. It is slower, for about two weeks. Then it is permanently faster.
If you do not know where to begin, start with the work that does not actually require you.
- Scheduling, invoicing, and chasing down late payments
- Routine customer questions that have the same answer every time
- Ordering, restocking, and vendor follow up
- Bookkeeping cleanup and monthly reconciliation
- Anything you have personally done more than fifty times
Write down how you do each one, give it to somebody, and let the first few attempts be imperfect. The goal is not perfection. The goal is getting your attention back so you can spend it on the decisions only you can make.
Then Fix the Thing That Causes the Grind
Once you have some room to think, spend it on profitability. Plenty of owners are exhausted because they are working at a price that never left room for help. You cannot delegate your way out of a margin that is too thin to pay anybody.
That is the single biggest problem I see, in new businesses and veteran ones alike, and it is fixable. Two good places to start are pricing for profit instead of winning the bid and how to set a price for a product or service.
You Can Do It
You made it through a hard year. The conditions ahead look better than the ones behind you, and the owners who come out of this stretch strongest will be the ones who stop running on empty first.
